Book Review: ‘Mind Viruses: America’s Irrational Obsessions’ By John Leake

John Leake’s “Mind Viruses: America’s Irrational Obsessions” explores one of the most fascinating and troubling aspects of human behavior: the way ideas can quickly spread and influence the way entire societies think.

Simply put, I believe the overarching theme of the book can be boiled down to one thing. Many Americans are extremely lazy in the way they think and only form certain opinions because someone on TV or their friends’ grandmother told them what to believe.

Using a mix of psychology, history, science, and culture, Leake, a six-time New York Times best-selling author, explains how certain ideas can spread — even when they are not based on any real evidence. His central argument is that ideas can behave much like viruses, spreading from person to person and influencing the way people see the world. Leake urges readers to question how much of what they believe is shaped by careful thought and how much is actually influenced by the media and public opinion.

Whether or not you agree with every conclusion Leake reaches, Skyhorse Publishing’s “Mind Viruses” raises important questions about the information we consume and the need to think critically in a world constantly bombarded with information. 

I found that one of the strongest parts of the book is its discussion of how fear affects people. Leake explains that it can make us more likely to follow the crowd or accept things without really asking any questions.

Groupthink is a major theme throughout the book. The author points out how emotional stories can spread fast through the media and social media, often influencing people’s opinions before they’ve had a chance to even think things through. Leake points to the COVID-19 pandemic as a powerful example of how repeated messaging can shape what people believe. Specifically, he writes about how questioning mask mandates or vaccine policies at the time often came with extreme social consequences. Many people remained silent because they feared being ostracized.

In many cases, the pressure to conform became so strong that simply asking a question was viewed by others as a sign of ignorance or even moral failure. It is unsettling to consider that we have reached a point where people are afraid to voice their opinions or ask questions out of fear of being villainized or “canceled.” Cancel culture became particularly pronounced during the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter era, when people were genuinely afraid of being fired from their jobs or physically harmed if they expressed an opinion that differed even slightly from what was deemed “normal.”

Leake also touches on transgenderism, raising questions about whether fear of being criticized has made some people less willing to engage in honest conversations about the topic. Many legacy media outlets portray being transgender as a beautiful, freeing thing for an individual — and they bombard the public with this sentiment. However, the media is not showing the multitude of people who have transitioned who deeply regret it and the damaging psychological effects sex changes have on people. When people are only seeing one side of the story, it’s no wonder they are all conforming to one idea. Leake includes multiple examples of transgender stories and the dangerous downside post surgery.

Leake also touches upon topics such as racism, climate change, fear of Russia, radical Islamic terror to make the case that the public needs to see both sides of each issue — not just popular narratives advanced in the legacy media. Additionally, he examines the powerful role that the media and public figures play in influencing the way people understand such issues.

We are living in a world where countless stories compete for attention, and the issues that receive the most coverage are not always the ones that matter most. In fact, I would argue that’s the case more than half the time. The book invites readers to consider whether their opinions are based on their own research or simply repeated messages they have absorbed over time from the same news channels and the same five people they regularly talk to.

Personally, it is a great reminder to be an active thinker rather than a passive consumer of information. Just because somebody you’ve known for many years told you their take on a situation, it is still important to take the extra step and form your own informed opinion. 

Furthermore, the author brought up Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s observation in his 1943 essay, “On Stupidity” which states that the exertion of central power through fear and propaganda may render other-wise intelligent people “mindless tools” who are incapable of recognizing that evil is being done right under their noses. This is a prominent theme in the book and Leake particularly relates it to what the world experienced during COVID.

I believe the book will likely connect with people who value questioning common beliefs and looking at issues from different perspectives. Leake challenges readers to recognize that everyone is susceptible to persuasive ideas, and is not something we can always avoid. 

I am certain a large percentage of us fall prey to it without being aware. Critical thinking means looking beyond other people’s biases and being honest enough to question our own beliefs. Although, it is no secret that when emotion is heightened, this can sometimes be tough to do. 

“Mind Viruses” covers such a wide range of cultural and political examples that, at times, it can feel like it takes on a lot at once. However, in this era we are in, Leake ultimately wants to convey that the battle for truth begins with understanding how our own minds work.

The book is especially a very fascinating read for those interested in psychology. I finished it thinking a lot more about where my own opinions come from and how easy it is to be influenced without even realizing.
