Zambia opposition plans court challenge to presidential vote
Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile says he will challenge the August 13 presidential election results in court, alleging serious irregularities in conduct, counting, transmission and declaration of results. The election commission declared President Hakainde Hichilema the winner with about 60% of the vote to Mundubile’s 38%, in a vote described as largely peaceful but marred by intimidation. Following the polls, authorities arrested multiple opposition figures in a raid that included gunfire near Mundubile’s home, and vote-counting was temporarily suspended amid violence and ballot-paper theft. Mundubile said he is under protection at an undisclosed location due to unnamed threats. International observers and UN rights officials voiced concerns about arrests and called for due process and adherence to human rights standards. The challenge unfolds amid a tense security environment and ongoing questions about Zambia’s political space and governance.
