Zambia arrests 11 opposition figures after election
Zambian security forces arrested 11 people, including senior opposition figures such as Brian Mundubile, after a raid they described as uncovering an insurrection plot and posing a threat to state security. Mundubile said the operation was an attack on his life and that colleagues were shot, while authorities said those detained possessed high-grade weapons and had been under surveillance for months. Mundubile and other opposition figures have alleged irregularities and repression ahead of the vote, though the government denies those claims. With more than half the constituencies counted, President Hakainde Hichilema leads, and the election day was described by observers as largely peaceful, even as late reforms and media access concerns linger. The authorities maintained the detainees included characters connected to foreign nationals and illegal training camps, and many suspects remain in custody in Lusaka as the vote tally continues.
