Flores Earthquake Toll Rises; Aftershocks Continue
An offshore magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Flores Island off East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, triggering landslides and extensive damage across six districts as rescuers search for the missing amid ongoing aftershocks. The death toll has risen to 47–51, with hundreds more injured and about 5,000 people displaced, many sheltering in tents or public buildings. Thousands of homes and numerous public facilities, including schools and health centers, were damaged, while power outages and blocked roads hampered relief efforts. Rescuers report difficulty reaching remote villages, though aid is flowing, with tens of thousands of aid packages and food supplies distributed. International offers, including Copernicus satellite imagery, have been extended to support search-and-rescue coordination across affected regencies. Temporary tsunami warnings were issued and later lifted as communities prepared for further aftershocks and sought reliable communications.
