TikTok, ByteDance Pay $400 Million COPPA Settlement
The Justice Department announced a $400 million settlement with TikTok and ByteDance over alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The payment structure calls for $300 million upfront and $100 million later upon entry of an order vacating a prior consent decree linked to Musical.ly. The 2024-initiated lawsuit claimed TikTok allowed children to create accounts and share data without parental consent. The DOJ noted that TikTok has since overhauled ownership, management, compliance, and privacy practices to strengthen protections for younger users. As part of the resolution, the case is dismissed with prejudice and ByteDance plans to form a predominantly American-owned joint venture to safeguard U.S. data. Officials described the settlement as a major recovery and a meaningful advance in protecting families online.
