Scheffler battles illness, maintains FedEx Cup lead
Scottie Scheffler battled hand, foot and mouth disease at the BMW Championship, playing through painful blisters on his hands and in his throat that made gripping the club difficult. Despite the adversity, he posted three straight under-par rounds and finished inside the top 15, ultimately T-12 at seven-under 273. He said he considered pulling out but a stubborn streak and his recent form, including an eight-shot win at St. Jude, kept him in the field for all four rounds. He was already assured of leading the FedEx Cup standings through the BMW Championship, a position that comes with a $23 million bonus, with the Tour Championship format to come next week. He notes he’s starting to feel better, with his hands normal but his throat still irritated, and he nearly shook hands with Cameron Young on the 18th. Overall, his health dictated a remarkable week given the circumstances, as he fought through the symptoms to finish among the leaders.
