Harden Re-signs with Cavaliers; Garland Traded
James Harden has agreed to a three-year, $97 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, including a player option for the 2028-29 season and a 15% trade kicker. The deal follows a roster reshaping that included Peyton Watson joining the Cavaliers as part of a sign-and-trade and, crucially, Darius Garland being sent to the Los Angeles Clippers, altering the team around Harden and Donovan Mitchell. Harden declined a $42.3 million option to maximize cap flexibility, and in 26 regular-season games with Cleveland he averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists, helping the Cavaliers reach the Eastern Conference finals. In the playoffs, his production dipped to 19.2 points with lower shooting efficiency and higher turnovers, underscoring questions about his fit as a long-term playoff closer. The contract lifts Harden’s career earnings to about $511 million, placing him among the top four all-time in NBA earnings alongside LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. The Cavaliers aim to contend again in a stacked Eastern Conference, with Harden continuing his backcourt pairing with Donovan Mitchell.
