DeGrom Reaches 2,000th Strikeout, Second-Fastest
Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom became the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,000 career strikeouts, accomplishing the milestone in 1,661 innings across 272 starts. He achieved it by fanning Abimelec Ortiz with his first two batters faced, prompting an ovation at Globe Life Field. By innings, only Chris Sale has reached 2,000 Ks faster (1,626 innings), while by games, Randy Johnson did it in 262 appearances, making deGrom the second-quickest in both metrics. DeGrom, 38, has endured a long journey from a late switch to pitching, through Tommy John surgery and a series of injuries that limited his recent seasons after back-to-back Cy Youngs in 2018-19. He joins the exclusive club as the 95th pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,000 strikeouts, rounding out a remarkable but injury-plagued Hall of Fame résumé. Entering the game with prior injury struggles, deGrom’s milestone adds a high-profile highlight to a season where he has battled health and consistency.
