NBA Sponsorship Probe Widens
The NBA has publicly pushed back on ESPN’s report that no evidence exists of Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funneling money to Kawhi Leonard to circumvent the salary cap, and officials say the investigation’s results will be clarified after it concludes. ESPN’s account, which centered on a lack of hard evidence, is now being countered by the NBA’s focus on whether introducing Leonard to team sponsors violated salary-cap rules or amounted to a ‘failure to supervise’ by Clippers personnel. The probe, headed by the law firm Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz and now nearing settlement talks, has broader scope beyond Aspiration to other Clippers sponsors such as Daktronics and Boingo Wireless. The Clippers and Leonard’s camp maintain that sponsorship introductions are standard practice and deny any off-book compensation or dictating endorsement terms. A trade of Leonard to the Toronto Raptors remains on hold pending the investigation’s outcome, with the league and arbitration pathways potentially shaping penalties if violations are found. The NBA has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with conflicting statements from ESPN and league officials prompting negotiations toward a resolution.
