Sony-TSMC Kumamoto Sensor JV 60/40 Split
Sony and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plan a roughly ¥1 trillion investment (about $6.3–$6.4 billion) to build a next-generation image-sensor joint venture in Kumamoto, with Sony holding about 60% and TSMC about 40%, targeting mass production as early as 2029. The project marks Sony’s shift toward a fab-light model, keeping sensor design IP under Sony while outsourcing manufacturing to TSMC, and expanding capacity at Sony’s Koshi facility to pursue automotive, robotics, and ‘physical AI’ applications beyond smartphones. Subsidies from the Japanese government are expected to accelerate development, and the venture follows Sony’s broader strategy of asset-light growth in semiconductors. The collaboration deepens ties between Sony and TSMC and is expected to supply high-end sensors to major customers in the near term, including Apple, as demand grows in cars, robotics, and autonomous systems. The plan aligns with TSMC’s global expansion and Japan’s push to reshore semiconductor manufacturing, building on the JASM partnership and Kumamoto’s established manufacturing cluster.
