Samsung SDI plans $3.2B Samsung Display stake sale
Samsung SDI is accelerating its growth strategy by agreeing to buy General Motors’ stake in its $3.5 billion New Carlisle, Indiana ESS-focused venture, signaling a push to control a critical battery plant tied to the expanding energy storage market. At the same time, Samsung SDI is offloading a substantial portion of its Samsung Display holdings, selling 13.09 million shares for about 4.45 trillion won to raise liquidity for growth initiatives. The move reduces Samsung SDI’s stake in Samsung Display from roughly 15.2% to 10.22% but preserves a meaningful minority position as it funds capital-intensive investments. The proceeds are expected to support facility investments, including battery plants in the United States, and to sustain diversification into areas such as lithium iron phosphate and all-solid-state batteries. Industry observers view these actions as a reinforcement of Samsung SDI’s commitment to expanding growth engines amid softer near-term demand for batteries, while maintaining strategic stakes in core affiliates. Together, the transactions reflect a broader strategy to strengthen balance sheet health and accelerate expansion into high-growth sectors like energy storage, AI data-center demand, humanoids, and aerospace.
