Ross Valley teachers receive $1 million gift
A California donor has given 1 million dollars to 100 public school teachers in the Ross Valley School District, awarding each educator a surprise check of $9,161.70 after they were called to a meeting without warning. Maja Kristin, a Marin County resident, said the gift was aimed at addressing what she sees as underfunding and inequities in public education in one of the country’s wealthiest counties. Teachers described the moment as life-changing, with some calling it meaningful financial relief amid high living costs and low per-pupil funding for Ross Valley compared with state averages. The district notes Ross Valley’s per-pupil funding is among the lowest in Marin County, contributing to broader concerns about teacher compensation and recruitment, despite the area’s overall affluence. Reports highlight that similar private donations have previously bolstered teacher pay in other districts, underscoring a pattern of directly targeting educator supplements outside traditional funding channels.
