Rabid beavers attack two teens; Maryland parks closed
Multiple rabid beaver attacks have led to partial closures at Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland, after a 13-year-old swimmer was bitten July 26 and a 19-year-old fisherman was bitten August 5; both beavers were euthanized and later tested positive for rabies. The park has closed day-use areas around Hunting Creek Lake while wildlife experts conduct nighttime surveys with thermal imaging and trap controls to ensure public safety, though other parts of the park remain open for camping and hiking. Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources says staff are actively checking for additional beavers and monitoring the area for safety. A separate incident at Seneca Creek State Park involving a 10-year-old girl was also reported, prompting a temporary closure of part of that park as authorities search for the involved beaver. Authorities emphasized ongoing vigilance and safety measures as the investigation continues and visitor access is adjusted accordingly. The incidents have drawn widespread attention to park safety and wildlife management in popular Maryland recreation areas.
