Quebec murder suspect arrested in Burnaby
A man wanted in connection with the 2022 Quebec murder of Sébastien Giroux was arrested in Burnaby, British Columbia, after police served a search warrant. Lee Van Smath Germain was one of three people charged in January in relation to Giroux’s death, with his co-accused arrested earlier and Germain remaining at large until the Burnaby arrest. Investigators in Montreal determined Germain had ties to British Columbia, prompting cooperation between the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC, the Montreal police, and the Metro Vancouver Transit Police. He appeared in court and was remanded in custody for six days to await his transfer back to Quebec to face the murder charge. The case has been described as a model of cross-jurisdictional policing and intelligence sharing across Canada, aimed at ensuring suspects in serious violent offences cannot evade justice. The investigation and arrest illustrate ongoing collaboration among police forces to pursue accountability for this 2022 homicide.
