Kennedy Center Name Fight Escalates
An emergency motion was filed to block the Kennedy Center from restoring President Donald Trump’s name, in the midst of a court fight over a May ruling that ordered removal. The center’s Trump-aligned board has voted to restore the name and to rename the plaza, with an additional inscription possible if a special fundraising fund reaches $100 million. Federal Judge Christopher Cooper previously blocked a two-year renovation closure and ordered removal of the name, raising questions about cost and timing. Opponents, led by Rep. Joyce Beatty, argue the board’s actions bypass the court order and would require congressional action. Engravings have been delayed ahead of September 8 to allow legal arguments, but some reports suggest the board may still pursue renaming while scaffolding remains as leverage. The dispute underscores ongoing tensions over governance, fundraising, and the politicization of national cultural institutions at the Kennedy Center.
