Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te visited Kinmen for the 68th anniversary of the 1958 clash, reaffirming Taiwan’s resolve to defend sovereignty and safeguard peace across the Taiwan Strait. He emphasized that peace is secured through strength and that not an inch of Taiwan, Kinmen, or nearby islands should be sacrificed. Kinmen and Matsu have remained under Taiwan since 1949, and no peace treaty or armistice has ever been signed with China. The 1958 confrontation marked the start of the second Taiwan Strait crisis and was the last major military engagement between the sides. Lai called for sustained military spending and unity in the face of what he described as Communist aggression, while signaling openness to dialogue with Beijing. Taiwan has signaled unprecedented defense spending for the coming year in response to heightened tensions near its shores.
