Nordic Nations Lose Confidence in Infantino, Demand Reform
Six Nordic FIFA members Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands issued a rare joint statement expressing lost confidence in Gianni Infantino and calling for sweeping governance reforms at FIFA. They backed calls from UEFA and other confederations for an independent investigation into the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal and the plan to sell a stake in events like the World Cup to private investors. The six Nordic associations urged binding guarantees that FIFA’s governance or competitions will not again be opened to private ownership and requested a comprehensive external review of the organisation’s governance framework. Denmark has pledged to find a credible alternative to Infantino in the 2027 presidential election. Infantino is seeking a fourth term despite pressure from UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF, with several federations withdrawing support while FIFA has apologized for past missteps. The appeals from the Nordics fit into broader calls for independence, checks and balances, transparency and accountability ahead of the Rabat 2027 election.
