New Jersey Teen Drops Lawsuit Meta, Google, Snap
A 15-year-old New Jersey plaintiff identified as P. M-Y. dropped her remaining claims against Meta, Google, and Snap in a California state court, with the parties saying the dismissal came without any payment as she sought to resume her life; TikTok had previously settled. The case was part of a larger pool of more than 3,300 personal injury lawsuits alleging social media platforms are addictive and harmful to young users, with this particular lawsuit selected as a bellwether trial for October. Meta and the other defendants maintain that their platforms are designed with safety measures and that the plaintiff had preexisting mental health issues, while YouTube and Snap defended their safety efforts. TikTok’s earlier settlement and the continuation of other trials against Meta, Google, and Snap underscore the broader, ongoing litigation accusing tech companies of harming children and teenagers online. The litigation includes trials in both federal and state courts, with multiple states pursuing claims about platform addictiveness and safety, and Meta asserting it has taken extensive steps to protect younger users. Overall, the series of dismissals and ongoing trials reflects a stagnating yet persistent legal battle over youth safety and platform design in the social media industry.
