NATO weighs coalition to secure Hormuz navigation
NATO is exploring ways to support freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz by coordinating contributions from member states, while deliberately avoiding a direct military mission or confrontation with Iran. A high-level videoconference on August 19, 2026, chaired by NATO generals, emphasized that any effort would use NATO’s coordinating capabilities rather than be an official alliance operation. France and Britain are leading a broader coalition, aiming to assemble roughly a dozen countries to restore safe passage, with any long-term arrangement requiring Iran’s consent. NATO officials stress the initiative is outside NATO’s direct mission, designed to facilitate collaboration among allies in addressing critical global energy routes. The Strait of Hormuz historically accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s oil trade, underscoring the strategic importance of keeping its passage open while tensions in the region are managed.
