Mt. Tabor Hosts Portland Soapbox Derby Thousands Attending
In Portland, the Portland Adult Soap Box Derby at Mt. Tabor Park drew thousands as 42 gravity-powered carts competed in a race that blends speed with pageantry. Cars ranged from prairie schooners to giant novelty designs, with speeds up to 50 mph and a notable crash into hay bales by the Vampires team. The event, running nearly 30 years since its 1997 origins, is volunteer-run and funded by donations, with a five-member board coordinating city officials and emergency services. The Derby emphasizes creativity and spectacle as much as speed, turning the hill into a festival of art, costumes, and community pride. Separately in Accrington, England, the AmazingAccrington Soapbox Challenge returns with a film-themed lineup, a new mega ramp at the start, and a full-day schedule from 9am to 3:30pm. The UK event features heats for community groups and businesses, live music, dance, and a trophy presentation, drawing thousands to the town center.
