Motorcyclist Wins $28 Million After LA Firetruck Crash
A Los Angeles jury awarded Robert Danbom about $28 million after his leg was amputated when a 65,000-pound fire truck crashed into his motorcycle at an intersection in East Hollywood on September 2, 2021. The truck, which was responding to a Kaiser Permanente call later determined to be a false alarm, allegedly ran through the intersection without properly stopping for cross-traffic. Danbom's lawsuit contended that first responders failed to follow basic safety standards, leading to his severe injuries. Surveillance video and testimony from his attorney suggested the vehicle did not slow or stop as claimed by officials. The attorney criticized the city for not settling the case earlier, arguing the payout would have been far less if negotiations had occurred earlier.
