M-KOPA Reaches 10 Million Customers Across Five African Markets
M-KOPA has reached 10 million customers across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, marking a milestone in its shift from solar financing to a major device-financing platform. Since entering smartphone financing in 2020, it added nine million customers in six years after taking eight years to reach one million. The company’s More than a Phone platform combines smartphone financing with embedded insurance, credit and device protection at the point of purchase for what it calls Everyday Earners who often lack traditional credit histories. Nigeria has been the fastest-growing market, surpassing one million customers quicker than any other market. Its expansive reach is supported by Africa’s largest direct-sales network (over 40,000 agents) and by Kenya’s manufacturing facility, which employs hundreds and has produced millions of devices. Experts and the company emphasize that the informal economy dominates sub-Saharan Africa and that M-KOPA’s credit model, built around daily livelihoods, points to durable, scalable growth.
