Kingston Home Bones Likely Historical Medical Specimens
Investigators say a cardboard box of human bones found July 10 in a Kingston rental home contains remains from at least five people, not a crime scene. Forensic analysis determined the bones show cut marks and wiring consistent with anatomical preparation for medical teaching, with seven neck vertebrae notably articulated. The remains are described as historical and commingled, with several bones showing signs that some individuals may have been exhumed from graves, and staining suggests embalmed burials. The homeowner, now living in Georgia, claimed the bones originated from a Cherokee person found in a cave and were to be donated to the University of Tennessee, though authorities say the bones were likely part of a teaching collection. University officials are being consulted to determine curation, disposal, and possible DNA analysis through the UT Repatriation Office. Authorities emphasize the findings point to educational rather than criminal origins and note the investigation will guide future handling of the remains.
