Judge blocks FBI HQ move to Reagan Building
A federal judge in Maryland blocked the Trump administration’s plan to relocate the FBI headquarters from Greenbelt to the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., and to redirect more than $1 billion in congressional funding for the Greenbelt project. The ruling found that the plan violated the Administrative Procedure Act and caused irreparable harm to Maryland and Prince George’s County by abandoning the site selected in 2023 and the accompanying funding. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said the decision protects Congress’s decision and the jobs, investment, and opportunity for the region. State and local officials argued that moving the headquarters and diverting funds would disregard the established site selection and federal commitments. Security and public-access concerns, raised by Maryland lawmakers, were part of the contentious debate over where the FBI should be headquartered. The case highlights a drawn-out political and legal battle over federal real estate decisions that continues to evolve.
