Hyundai Hope on Wheels expands cancer survivorship scale
Pediatric cancer research has driven major advances over the last decade, with the FDA approving 10 immunotherapies and 20 targeted therapies and Hyundai Hope on Wheels investing $303 million to fund more than 1,600 grants across 210 institutions, advancing our understanding of cancer biology and new treatments. Yet survivorship remains complex, as long-term physical and psychosocial challenges persist for child survivors beyond the moment of victory bells, underscoring ongoing education needs about what survivorship truly means. Public perception often underestimates the ongoing journey, highlighting a gap between hopeful milestones and the reality of ongoing care and monitoring for survivors. Separately, preclinical work at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center shows that combining radiopharmaceutical therapy with CAR T-cell therapy reduced relapsed neuroblastoma tumors by notable margins in lab models, suggesting potential for broader solid-tumor applications pending human trials. In Canada, the University of Calgary is expanding training through a Lung Cancer Clinical & Research Fellowship, integrating thoracic oncology practice with translational research and real-world outcome studies. These efforts collectively illustrate a landscape where breakthrough therapies, survivorship care, and international training programs converge to improve outcomes for pediatric and other cancers.
