Commanders reportedly release Moody as Stevens wins starter
The Washington Commanders have released kicker Jake Moody, ending their training-camp kicking competition and naming undrafted rookie Drew Stevens as the temporary starter. Stevens earned the job after outperforming Moody in camp, including a 41-yard made field goal against the Dolphins, while Moody had shown inconsistency in practices. Moody, who connected on 10 of 11 field goals last season across three teams, joined Washington in the offseason but was ultimately replaced. Stevens, 22, is notable for setting Iowa records for most field goals made (76) and the longest in school history at 58 yards. The decision underscores Washington’s ongoing instability at the kicker position, a trend of frequent roster changes since 2020. Moody will seek opportunities elsewhere after one preseason game led to his ouster, with Stevens expected to continue handling kicking duties for now.
