Colorado Sues GEO Group Over TB Investigation
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has filed a lawsuit against GEO Group, the private operator of the Aurora immigrant detention center, for noncompliance with a state public health order tied to a confirmed tuberculosis case. The suit argues GEO has blocked and delayed the state’s TB investigation by refusing access to information such as medical records, contacts, and detainee discharge and transfer details, and seeks emergency injunctive relief to enforce the order. Colorado public health officials have said they cannot independently verify GEO’s claims that the TB case is isolated and that no active cases remain, highlighting ongoing concerns about transparency and cooperation. GEO contends it is cooperating with authorities and notes federal involvement by DHS and ICE, while asserting there are no active TB cases at the facility. The lawsuit, filed in Adams County District Court, underscores a broader public health objective to prevent disease spread by ensuring full compliance with investigative orders. The case has drawn comments from state officials stressing the legal duty to cooperate and protect residents, as GEO and ICE face ongoing scrutiny over transparency and adherence to state health protocols.
