China, Indonesia Plan Jakarta Security Economic Talks
China and Indonesia are set to hold high-level talks in Jakarta, with foreign and defence ministers meeting alongside a first-of-its-kind Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue to tackle security, economic ties, and regional security concerns amid tensions in the South China Sea and broader US-China rivalry. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will join Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono for a 2+2 defence ministers' meeting and participate in the inaugural Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue, aimed at assessing cooperation and setting strategic priorities for their evolving bilateral partnership. Officials say the discussions will cover economic partnership, development, modernization, and broader political and security cooperation at bilateral, regional, and global levels. Analysts note that the talks come after a recent joint naval exercise east of Taiwan and amid Jakarta’s careful handling of Beijing-Washington dynamics, with Indonesia stressing defence diplomacy and non-escalation in the South China Sea. The Jakarta meetings are framed as a bid to reinforce economic commitments, sustain investment, and advance the five-pillar partnership including political, economic, people-to-people, maritime, and security cooperation.
