Brennan wins Vuelta stage two, Pogacar holds red

Britain’s Matt Brennan won the second stage of the Vuelta a España, a 214.3-kilometer trek from Monaco to Manosque, while overall leader Tadej Pogacar retained the red jersey. A four-man break including Ethan Hayter led much of the day, but Brennan surged in the uphill finish and Pogacar followed before the sprint was neutralized by the peloton. Brennan also earned six bonus seconds by winning the intermediate sprint, though he could not stay with Pogacar to take the red jersey. Pogacar, aiming for a Grand Tour double this season, holds a nine-second lead over Wout van Aert, with Brennan in third. Stage three will be 174 kilometers from Gruissan to Font Romeu, the race’s first high-altitude finale.
