Boohoo Fined €2.3 Million in France
France’s consumer watchdog fined Boohoo €2.3 million for deceptive pricing and product-labelling practices on its French site, part of a broader crackdown on fast-fashion retailers. Regulators said promotions misled shoppers, with 40% of promotions not representing genuine reductions, 7% offering smaller discounts than advertised, and 48% involving price increases, across the listings reviewed. In addition, Boohoo used terms like “leather” or “suede” to describe synthetic materials, violating French labelling rules. The regulator noted the issues stemmed from October 2023 to February 2024 under previous management, and Boohoo said the problems have since been addressed and cooperated fully. The penalty comes as France expands scrutiny of online fashion pricing, a trend reinforced by recent actions against rivals like Shein and amid Boohoo’s ongoing efforts to revive sales under its Debenhams Group branding. Boohoo’s involvement also ties to a separate US settlement four years earlier over sham promotions and escalating public scrutiny of online discount practices.
