Ferrari Luce Sells for $40 Million; Buyer Revealed
The bespoke Ferrari Luce, Chassis 0, sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby’s Monterey charity auction, making it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction. It is the first production chassis from Ferrari’s Luce program, configured under Tailor Made with Madreperla Semi-Gloss paint and Perla Le Mans metallic leather, making it a one-off collector’s item. All proceeds go to The Ferrari Foundation to support educational initiatives. The buyer was billionaire inventor Dr. Herbert Wertheim, who previously purchased a Daytona SP3 at Monterey, with possession deferred until delivery in early 2027. The sale followed mixed reception to the Luce’s design and a dip in Ferrari’s stock at the May reveal, but shares later recovered amid upbeat earnings and strong orders. Ferrari’s first fully electric model, developed with LoveFrom, signals a shift from combustion engines toward electrification, with the Luce originally priced around €550,000 and produced in limited numbers.
