Amazon Plans $2B Latin America Prime Video Expansion
Amazon has announced a multi-year plan to invest more than $2 billion in Prime Video across Latin America from 2027 through 2030, financing a broad slate of local originals, licensed content, and live sports rights in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Chile. The initiative aims to more than double the number of local original titles by 2030, with a 2027 slate featuring dozens of new titles across scripted, unscripted, and film formats. The company also plans to expand into new territories such as Peru, Paraguay, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica, introducing transactional revenue models in those markets. Amazon executives emphasised that the investment targets regional breadth rather than a single country or genre, underscoring a long-term commitment to nurture Latin American storytelling and talent. Market observers note that the plan aligns with intensified regional competition, as Netflix and other players push to grow their local-language offerings, while the investment could pressure near-term profit margins. The announcements were highlighted by senior Prime Video executives, including Kelly Day and Javiera Balmaceda, who described the strategy as a substantial vote of confidence in Latin American creators and audiences.
