Screw spline and shear block are two different mechanical failure or protection mechanisms used in power transmission systems. A screw spline is a helical gear arrangement where angled teeth on the shaft and hub allow relative axial (lengthwise) movement while transmitting torque; if excessive torque is applied, the teeth can slip axially along the screw threads, providing a gradual, controlled disengagement. A shear block (or shear pin mechanism) is a more abrupt safety device consisting of a deliberately weak fastener—typically a pin, bolt, or block of material—designed to break or shear cleanly when torque exceeds a preset threshold, immediately stopping power transmission and protecting equipment from damage.
The key differences are: shear blocks provide sudden, complete disconnection when a load limit is exceeded, while screw splines offer gradual slippage and can re-engage; shear blocks require replacement after failure, whereas screw splines can be reset by backing off axially; and shear blocks are simpler one-time protectors, while screw splines act as both a connection and a controlled release mechanism. Shear blocks are common in lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other equipment where protecting the engine from jamming is critical. Screw splines appear in industrial equipment where some torque transmission must continue even under overload, or where repeated protection without replacement is needed. Both serve similar safety goals—preventing catastrophic damage—but operate on fundamentally different principles: mechanical shearing versus mechanical slippage.
