Front lunges (also called forward lunges) and reverse lunges (also called backward lunges) are two variations of the same basic movement, differing mainly in the direction you step and the resulting muscle emphasis, joint stress, and difficulty level.
Front Lunges You start standing and step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent around 90 degrees, then push off the front foot to return to the starting position. Because the front leg has to decelerate your body weight as it lands and then reverse that momentum to push back, front lunges place more eccentric (deceleration) demand on the front leg's quadriceps and put more stress on the knee joint. They also require more balance and coordination, since you're moving forward with momentum. This makes front lunges slightly more challenging and higher-impact, and they're often avoided or modified by people with knee sensitivity.
Reverse Lunges You start standing and step backward with one leg, lowering into the lunge position, then push through the front foot to return to standing. Because you're stepping back rather than landing with forward momentum, reverse lunges are generally considered easier on the knees and joints, and they place more emphasis on the glutes and hamstrings of the front (stationary) leg. They also tend to be easier to balance since there's less forward momentum to control, making them a common choice for beginners, those rehabbing an injury, or anyone prioritizing joint-friendly training.
