Dry mouth during sleep, called nocturnal xerostomia, occurs because saliva production naturally decreases when you're asleep. During waking hours, your body continuously produces saliva through salivary glands, but this production slows dramatically during rest, leaving your mouth feeling parched upon waking or during nighttime wakings.
Several factors can intensify this effect. Breathing through your mouth instead of your nose during sleep allows moisture to escape and prevents saliva from accumulating. Sleeping in a dry environment, particularly with heating systems running or low humidity, accelerates moisture loss. Dehydration from insufficient fluid intake during the day or excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption—both diuretics—reduce overall body hydration and thus saliva availability.
Certain medications commonly cause dry mouth as a side effect, including antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and anticholinergics. Age-related changes also play a role, as saliva production naturally declines with age.
Underling health conditions can contribute too. Sleep apnea frequently causes dry mouth because sufferers often breathe through their mouths. Sjögren's syndrome, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, and radiation therapy affecting salivary glands all reduce saliva production. Stress and anxiety can also temporarily decrease salivary flow.
To alleviate nocturnal dry mouth, try increasing daytime hydration, using a humidifier in your bedroom, practicing nasal breathing techniques, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine before bed. If dry mouth persists or causes discomfort, consult a healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions or medication side effects requiring adjustment.
