A 1.2V battery is a rechargeable battery that produces 1.2 volts of electrical potential, most commonly in the form of a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cell. This voltage is the standard output of individual rechargeable cells, though multiple cells can be combined to create higher voltages.
The most familiar examples are AA and AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries, which are sold for use in everyday devices like remote controls, flashlights, cameras, and wireless mice. Before NiMH technology dominated the rechargeable market, 1.2V batteries were typically nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells, which are now less common due to environmental concerns about cadmium.
The 1.2V rating is lower than the 1.5V produced by alkaline disposable batteries (like Duracell or Energizer), which is important to know because some older devices designed for alkaline batteries may not function properly with 1.2V rechargeables, though most modern electronics work fine with them. A major advantage of 1.2V rechargeable batteries is that they can be recharged hundreds of times, making them more economical and environmentally friendly than single-use alkaline batteries over the long term.
1.2V NiMH batteries also have low self-discharge rates with modern formulations, meaning they hold their charge for extended periods when not in use. Many people use rechargeable AA and AAA batteries as direct replacements for alkaline batteries in their household devices.
