Overuse of antibiotics can cause several harmful side effects. The most significant concern is antibiotic resistance, where bacteria develop the ability to survive antibiotic treatment, making infections harder to treat in the future. This is a public health threat affecting entire populations, not just individuals.
Direct physical side effects from excessive antibiotic use include gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting—often because antibiotics kill beneficial gut bacteria alongside harmful ones. Clostridioides difficile infection, a potentially serious diarrheal illness, can develop when normal intestinal flora are eliminated. Allergic reactions ranging from mild rashes to severe anaphylaxis can occur, particularly with penicillin-based antibiotics.
Other adverse effects include fungal infections (oral thrush or yeast infections) when antibiotics disrupt the body's natural microbial balance, liver or kidney damage with certain antibiotics if overused, and photosensitivity (severe sun sensitivity) with some antibiotic classes. Some people experience headaches, dizziness, or neurological effects depending on the antibiotic type.
High doses or prolonged use may also cause drug interactions, interfering with other medications like birth control or blood thinners. Tendon damage has been associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics in some cases.
The key distinction is that these risks increase substantially when antibiotics are taken longer than medically necessary, in excessive doses, or for conditions where they're not indicated (like viral infections). Taking antibiotics exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider minimizes these risks while preserving their effectiveness for future needs.
