Attunement slots in Dark Souls are inventory spaces reserved specifically for equipping spells and miracles. Unlike weapon or armor slots, attunement slots are determined by your Attunement stat—the higher your Attunement value, the more spell slots you unlock, typically gaining one additional slot for every few points invested.
Once you acquire a spell or miracle through items found in the world or purchased from NPCs, you must attune it to a slot at a bonfire to use it. A single spell can only be equipped in one slot at a time, and you can only cast spells that are currently attuned. This system encourages strategic decision-making: players must choose which spells to equip before heading out, balancing offensive spells, healing miracles, and utility magic based on their anticipated needs and playstyle.
The number of slots varies by game. In Dark Souls, most players have between 3 to 10 attunement slots depending on their Attunement investment, with diminishing returns at higher levels. Some spells are more powerful but consume multiple slots, so there's a resource-management layer to spell selection.
Attunement also affects casting speed—higher Attunement increases your spell casting velocity, making this stat valuable for both capacity and performance. This dual benefit makes Attunement attractive for spell-focused builds. Players pursuing magic-heavy playstyles typically invest significantly in this stat, while melee-focused characters might allocate only minimal points to retain access to a heal or utility spell or two.
