Ich (also called ick or white spot disease) is highly contagious among fish in aquariums and other enclosed water systems. It is caused by the parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, which spreads through water from infected fish to healthy ones.
The parasite has a life cycle that makes it particularly transmissible: infected fish shed microscopic parasites into the water, where they can survive and infect other fish for several days. Once a parasite attaches to a new fish's skin or gills, it burrows underneath and feeds on tissue, creating the characteristic white spots. The disease progresses quickly through a population in aquariums because the closed environment keeps parasites concentrated.
Ich is contagious to most freshwater fish species, though some species are more resistant than others. Saltwater fish can contract a similar condition called marine ich, caused by a different parasite species, which follows comparable transmission patterns.
To prevent spread, quarantine infected fish in a separate tank, treat the main tank (typically with heat elevation or medication like copper or formalin), and avoid moving equipment between tanks without disinfection. The good news is that ich is treatable, especially if caught early. Treatment effectiveness depends on the parasite's life stage—the free-swimming stage in water is most vulnerable to medications, while the encysted stage on the fish is harder to reach, which is why treatment typically lasts 7-10 days to cover multiple life cycle generations.
