EHD (Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease) and CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) are two distinct wildlife diseases affecting different animal species and caused by different pathogens. EHD primarily affects white-tailed deer, mule deer, and other ungulates, caused by a virus transmitted by biting midges. It causes fever, hemorrhaging in internal organs, lameness, and often death, typically appearing in late summer and fall. CWD, by contrast, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by prions (misfolded proteins) that affects cervids including deer, elk, and moose. CWD spreads through direct animal contact and environmental contamination and causes progressive behavioral changes, weight loss, and neurological symptoms. While both are serious wildlife diseases affecting similar animal populations, they have different causes, transmission methods, geographic distributions, and clinical presentations. EHD outbreaks can be dramatic but often seasonal and localized, while CWD is chronic, persistent in environments, and has spread across multiple states and regions. Wildlife managers monitor both diseases separately due to their distinct epidemiology and management challenges. Hunters and wildlife enthusiasts should be aware of both to recognize potential signs and follow appropriate safety guidelines in affected areas.
