Amtrak instead operates on track primarily owned and maintained by freight railroads, which prioritizes freight traffic and limits Amtrak's speed potential.
Amtrak's long-distance routes (like the Coast Starlight or Southwest Chief) are even slower, averaging 30–40 mph overall despite higher track speeds, because they serve numerous small towns and operate on shared freight corridors with frequent delays.
