There's no direct "you've been blocked" notification on Instagram, but several clues together can strongly suggest it:
1. Search for their profile If you can't find the account by searching their username (and you're sure you spelled it right), that's a strong sign—blocked users often can't locate the blocker's profile at all.
2. Check their profile directly If you have a link to their profile (from an old message, tagged post, or another browser/account) and it shows "User not found," "Sorry, this page isn't available," or a blank profile with no posts, followers, or following count showing, you're likely blocked. Note: this same message also appears if the account was deactivated or deleted entirely.
3. Look at your DM thread Open your old conversation with them. If messages fail to send (a red exclamation point appears) or you can no longer see their profile photo/updates in the chat, blocking is likely.
4. Try from another account Log into a different Instagram account (or ask a friend) and search for the same profile. If it appears normally there but not on your account, you've almost certainly been blocked rather than the account being deleted.
5. Check if they still follow you or you follow them If you previously followed each other and suddenly can't find them in your following list, or their posts vanish from your feed and Stories, that's another indicator.
Important caveats:
- Instagram never sends a notification saying "so-and-so blocked you."
- The same symptoms occur if the person deactivated their account, deleted it, or set it to a very restricted privacy state, so combine multiple checks before concluding you're blocked.
- Being "restricted" (a softer feature) is different from blocked—restricted accounts can still see your profile and send messages, but you won't see their activity status or read receipts.
The most reliable method is combining a search from another account with checking the direct profile link.
