You can share your iPhone's cellular data with a computer using Personal Hotspot in three ways: Wi-Fi, USB cable, or Bluetooth. Here's how to set up each method.
First, enable Personal Hotspot on the iPhone:
- Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot (or Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot).
- Toggle "Allow Others to Join" on.
- Note the Wi-Fi password shown on that screen (you can tap it to change it).
Method 1: Connect via Wi-Fi
- On your computer, open the Wi-Fi network list.
- Select your iPhone's name from the list of available networks.
- Enter the password shown in the Personal Hotspot settings.
- Once connected, a blue bar appears at the top of the iPhone screen showing the connection is active.
Method 2: Connect via USB cable
- Plug the iPhone into the computer using a Lightning-to-USB or USB-C cable (matching your iPhone model).
- On the iPhone, tap "Trust This Computer" if prompted, and enter your passcode.
- On a Mac, go to System Settings > Network, select the iPhone from the device list, and it should connect automatically.
- On Windows, you may need iTunes or Apple's device drivers installed for the PC to recognize the iPhone as a network adapter; once installed, select the iPhone from network connections.
Method 3: Connect via Bluetooth
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure it's on.
- On the computer, go to Bluetooth settings and pair with the iPhone.
- Once paired, select the iPhone as a network connection to use its hotspot.
Tips:
- Wi-Fi is easiest and fastest to set up; USB tends to give the most stable connection and charges your phone simultaneously; Bluetooth uses the least battery but is slower.
- Personal Hotspot requires a cellular plan that supports tethering — check with your carrier if the option doesn't appear.
- Data used over hotspot counts against your cellular data plan, so watch for overage charges if you don't have unlimited data.
