Clearing temporary internet files removes cached web data, browsing history, and cookies stored on your computer, freeing up disk space and improving privacy.
On Windows:
- Open Settings and go to Privacy & Security > Clear browsing data
- Or press Ctrl + Shift + Delete in your browser (Edge, Chrome, Firefox)
- Select the time range ("All time" for everything)
- Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files
- Click Clear
On Mac:
- Open Safari and select Safari > Settings
- Go to the Privacy tab
- Click Manage Website Data and select sites to remove, or click Remove All
- Or use Chrome/Firefox: press Command + Shift + Delete
In Windows Disk Cleanup utility:
- Search for Disk Cleanup in Windows
- Select your drive and scan
- Check Temporary Internet Files and Temporary files
- Click Delete Files
Important notes: Clearing cache will log you out of websites and may slow initial page loads temporarily as files rebuild. Cookies store login credentials and preferences, so removing them logs you out everywhere. If you only want to free space without affecting functionality, consider scheduling automatic cleanup in your browser settings rather than manual deletion.
Most modern browsers allow you to set cache clearing to run automatically on exit, which is a convenient middle ground between privacy and convenience.
