To change the administrator account in Windows 10, open Settings and navigate to Accounts > Other people. Click Add someone else to this PC, enter the new user's email or create a local account, then complete the setup. Once the new account exists, right-click it and select Change account type, then choose Administrator from the dropdown menu.
If you need to modify the built-in Administrator account (disabled by default), open Command Prompt as Administrator, type net user administrator /active:yes, and press Enter. You can then set a password with net user administrator * and follow the prompts.
To demote a current administrator account, go to Settings > Accounts > Other people, select the account, click Change account type, and switch it to Standard user.
If you're locked out or forgot your admin password, you'll need to use password recovery options—sign in with a Microsoft account linked to recovery email, use a password reset disk if you created one previously, or use Windows installation media to access recovery tools.
Always ensure at least one administrator account remains active on your system for system maintenance and security updates. Administrator accounts have full control over system settings, software installation, and user management, so assign this role carefully and keep the password secure.*
