Replacing a CV axle is a moderately difficult DIY job — harder than changing brake pads, but well within reach of a patient home mechanic with the right tools. Professionals typically finish the job in 1–2 hours per axle, while a first-timer might spend half a day, especially on the driver's side of transverse (front-wheel-drive) engines where the axle nut can be extremely tight.
What makes it manageable:
- The basic steps are straightforward: raise and secure the vehicle, remove the wheel, remove the axle nut and any retaining hardware, separate the axle from the hub and transmission, then reverse the process with a new axle.
- Complete axle assemblies (with CV joints and boots pre-installed) are widely sold, so you usually don't need to disassemble or repack a joint yourself.
What makes it challenging:
- The axle nut is torqued extremely high (often 150–250+ ft-lbs) and can be rusted on, requiring a breaker bar, impact wrench, or a lot of leverage plus the vehicle's weight on the ground to loosen safely.
- Separating the outer CV joint from the steering knuckle and the ball joint sometimes requires a puller or careful prying without damaging seals or boots.
- On some vehicles the inner joint is held in the transmission by a circlip that can be stubborn to pop free, and catching transmission fluid that drains out adds a step.
- Working space is tight, and there's risk of damaging the axle boot, wheel speed sensor wiring, or other nearby components if you're not careful.
Tools generally needed: floor jack and jack stands, socket set including a large socket for the axle nut, breaker bar or impact wrench, torque wrench, pry bar, and sometimes a ball joint separator or slide hammer.
Overall, it's a common "intermediate" DIY repair — many people successfully do it in a driveway with basic tools, but those uncomfortable with high-torque fasteners or without a way to safely lift the vehicle often prefer to pay a shop, where labor typically costs less than the axle part itself.
